1Take the photo
How to take a photo that passes
- Stand about 2 ft in front of the white background, so your shadow does not land on it.
- Face a window or a lamp. Light should reach your face evenly from the front.
- Ask someone to hold the phone 4 to 5 ft away at eye level. Selfies distort the face.
- Leave space around the head and shoulders. The app does the cropping.
- Look straight at the camera with eyes open and mouth closed. No glasses, no hat.
2Fit it to the size
Head is measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair. 1 in = 25.4 mm.
Your photo goes here. Hair touches the top line, chin lands in the green band.
Checks
Automatic fixes crop, straighten, and adjust overall brightness and color. The face is never retouched, and the background is edited only if you choose that above. If a warning stays, retake the photo.
3Print sheet
JPG works at photo kiosks and from the phone's print menu.

Printing and cutting
- 4 × 6 and 5 × 7: order it as a normal photo print at a drugstore or photo kiosk, or print at home on glossy or matte photo paper.
- Print at 100%. Turn off “fit to page”, “borderless expansion” and auto-enhance.
- Before cutting, measure the scale line on the sheet with a ruler. Photo labs sometimes enlarge prints by 1 to 2 percent. If the line is more than 1 mm off, print again with a white border or at “actual size”.
- Letter and A4 sheets keep a wide margin, because home printers cannot print to the edge.
- Cut just inside the gray lines with a paper trimmer, or center a photo punch over them.
4Photo file for online forms
One photo saved as a .jpg, cropped to the exact passport photo size (). The real size is written into the file, so it also prints at true size at 100%.
5Send it to your email
Useful when you made the photo on your phone and want to print from a computer. The files are attached to one email. We do not keep the photo or your address afterwards.
